Jamal Marcus talks Vanderbilt

Jamal Marcus

Jamal Marcus is one of the most coveted juniors in the Tar Heel state for 2012. The 6-2, 220 pound DE/LB is from a stacked Hillside High School (Durham, NC) squad that captured the 4A state title this past season. As of late, Hillside has been a recruiting factory of D-1 studs. Marcus is the latest stud to come out of Hillside and he has recently picked up some big offers.

"My latest offers were Notre Dame and USC," he said. "Vanderbilt offered me a month or two ago. I talked with all of the Vanderbilt coaches and they offered me. Coach Bankins is the coach recruiting me and he recruited me when he was at Maryland."

Among Notre Dame, USC, and Vanderbilt, he also has offers from schools such as Auburn, Clemson, Duke, ECU, Maryland, Minnesota, NC State, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, and Wake Forest. Despite all of the offers, Marcus isn't ready to name a top school yet.

"I don't really have a particular list but just some schools I am considering right now like Auburn, (North) Carolina, and Clemson to name a few," said Marcus. "I don't have a list of top schools or anything; those are just some of the schools that I am considering right now."

Marcus might not have a top list, but he does know exactly what he's looking for in a school.

"I'm looking for a good atmosphere and a school that has good academics," he said. "I want to be prepared on and off the field."

Some schools are recruiting him as a defensive end, and some at linebacker. Marcus doesn't care where he plays at the next level. Vanderbilt is eyeing him at one position but there are other things about Vanderbilt that have caught his eye.

"It's a really good school academically and football wise," said Marcus. "They are recruiting me as a defensive end. I can see myself playing defensive end or linebacker. My decision will be not be based on my position, so whatever school I decide to go to will be whatever position they are recruiting me at."

With a few visits in the books, Marcus plans on visiting a number of schools this summer. Vanderbilt has a chance at getting a visit and making an impression on this talented prospect.

"I had a good visit to Auburn, and I've visited North Carolina, North Carolina State, ECU, and Duke so far," he said. "The Auburn trip stood out, and the UNC trip did a lot too. I'll probably take a trip to Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Clemson and probably some other schools this summer. I might visit Vanderbilt too. I don't really have a set date on when I'll make my decision. Whenever it happens, it'll happen."
