VU WBB: Vandy 95, Western Illinois 51

Vanderbilt improved to 2-0 in the young season with a 95-51 victory over Western Illinois Monday night in Memorial Gym. Four Dores scored in double figures led by Jasmine Lister with 15 points, followed by Stephanie Holzer with 14, Tiffany Clarke with 13, and Clair Watkins with 10.

Junior guard Gabby Smith made her first appearance of the season after missing the exhibition game and the season opener due to a concussion suffered in the pre-season. In her return to the court, she scored nine points, with five assists and no turnovers in 19 minutes of play off the bench.

The starting lineup remained the same as in the previous game, with freshman guard Kady Schrann joining Jasmine Lister, Christina Foggie, Stephanie Holzer, and Elan Brown in the starting five.

Freshman guard Maggie Morrison came off the bench to score nine points, including a 4-4 from the free throw line, along with four assists.

Junior post Tiffany Clarke had another productive game, with 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots in 13 minutes of play. "We kept her minutes short so she could go as hard as she could, and those minutes were really good, quality minutes," said Head Coach Melanie Balcomb after the game.

Senior Jordan Coleman scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds in 13 minutes of playing time.

Sophomore guard Christina Foggie scored nine points by knocking down three 3-pointers on four attempts. She also added four assists with no turnovers.

Jasmine Lister's 15 points came from both inside . . .

. . . and outside, including three 3-pointers on five attempts. In addition, she had seven assists.

In all the team had a total of 28 assists on 37 made baskets, including this one by Maggie Morrison on a fast break. After she delivered the ball . . .

. . . . Gabby Smith completed the play.

Freshman post Clair Watkins scored 10 points shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line in 17 minutes of playing time.

With a roster of only 10 players going into this season, during the summer Coach Balcomb invited Nadine Ndip to join the team as a walk-on. After logging as many hours in practice and workouts as the other players on the team, on Monday night, she got some playing time as well.

Next action for Vanderbilt will come on Wednesday night when the Dores host South Carolina Upstate. Gametime is 7 p.m.
