VandyMania.com Players of the Week

Jordan Matthews (VM-Stan Jones)

Vanderbilt lost a hard-fought 17-13 contest to No. 9 South Carolina on Thursday. After each game VandyMania.com names an offensive and defensive player of the week. We also name an unsung hero of the week. Look inside to see who gets the honors this week.

OFFENSE

Jordan Matthews, wide receiver

Matthews, a junior from Madison, Ala., had eight catches for 147 yards.  His 78-yard catch and run in the second quarter pulled Vanderbilt to within three of the Gamecocks after USC had went up 10-0.  Matthews now has 64 career catches for 10 touchdowns.

DEFENSE

Kenny Ladler, safety

Kenny Ladler, a junior from Stone Mountain, Ga., had 9 tackles, a sack and an interception during the game. His first quarter pick of Connor Shaw put Vanderbilt in position to take an early lead. Ladler now has 3 career interceptions and 119 tackles.

UNSUNG HERO

Carey Spear, kicker

Spear, a junior from Mayfield Village, Ohio, made two field goals during the game including one from 25 yards and another from 44 yards.  He likely would have had a third had it not been for a costly penalty.  Spear's 44-yarder was further than any field goal kicked by Vanderbilt last season.  Spear also had four kickoffs that were touchbacks.
