Sixteen Vanderbilt seniors make up the first class to ever play in two consecutive bowl games during their Commodore careers. Leading up to the Music City Bowl, VandyMania.com will look back on each senior's career. In this segment Austin Monahan is featured.
THE BASICS:
86 Austin Monahan
Hometown: Charlotte, N.C.
High school: Country Day
Position: TE
HT: 6-6 WT: 252
Chose Vanderbilt over: Duke.
OVERVIEW:
Austin Monahan was a very late Commodore signee in the 2007 recruiting class. VandyMania analysts were scrambling around trying to get information on Austin because they hadn't heard of him before. He turned out to be a solid player and even contributed as a freshman in the big win at nationally ranked South Carolina where he made the first catch of his long VU career. Unfortunately for Monahan, his career has been marred with injuries. He missed the entire 2010 season due to a leg injury sustained in preseason practice and portions of three other seasons due to other injuries.
BEST MOMENT:
It was on the football field but wasn't a play although Monahan did have several multi-catch efforts in SEC contests. On October 15, 2011 Vanderbilt had just lost a heartbreaker to Georgia, 33-28. Vandy head coach James Franklin tried to speak to a Bulldog assistant about the conduct of some of the UGA players. That assistant then went bizirk on Franklin. As the Georgia players moved towards the Vandy sideline taunting the Vandy players, one tall player in black and gold moved between the two coaches and helped calm things down. His name, Austin Monahan.
MEMORABLE QUOTE:
"I'm definitely coming back." on August 15, 2010. Just four days after suffering a season ending injury in preseason practice.
HONORS:
2009-12 SEC Academic Honor Roll.
CAREER STATS:
Games play in: 43
Receptions: 18
Receiving yards: 182
