Following up the most successful season in the history of Commodore football is not going to be easy. Perhaps then that is one of the reasons why Vanderbilt vice chancellor and athletic director David Williams has pushed so hard for the 2013 opener to by moved to Thursday night. After all, it worked pretty well for the 'Dores in the long run last year.

vice chancellor and athletic director David Williams has pushed so hard for the 2013 opener to by moved to Thursday night. After all, it worked pretty well for the 'Dores in the long run last year.
It has been announced that the 'Dores and the Rebels will kick off the season as the second part of the ESPN opening night double header on August 29th at 7:15 central time. Though the symmetry from 2012 may be a fringe benefit, hopefully with a different end result in the game, the main reason for Vandy to play in this game is the publicity that it will bring the school.
“It has been awhile to get us to this point,” Williams said to the
. “A lot of pieces had to come together, and sometimes the harder part is maintaining rather than getting there. This decision, and the decision to play last year on Thursday, is because we want people to get used to Vanderbilt. The kids and coaches are doing their part by winning the games. We need to do our job to make sure people are taking notice.”
Opening night is THE premier spot for Vanderbilt football. If you are anything like me you are jonesing for football already and the loooong baseball season is going to do nothing to placate that need. By the middle of the season people may be focusing on nothing but their own team and games of national importance, but for those first couple of weeks anything will do. Thus Vandy positioning themselves for the marquee game on opening night for the second year in a row, at home no less, gives them a viewing appeal that is unmatched at any other point in the season.
The best part of this for Vandy fans is that it is clear the staff and administrators are not resting on their laurels. There is an old saying in sports that if you are standing still you are going backwards and it is clearer than ever that no one involved with Commodore football is about to let that happen to the black and gold.
