Virginia WR has Vanderbilt offer

Gary Jennings

As a junior player at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, Va., Gary Jennings was thrust into the role of starting quarterback and has garnered some recruiting attention at the position. Most recently, the Naval Academy offered Jennings at quarterback. Wide Receiver, however, is Jennings bread and butter and where he believes his future will be at the college level.

It's where most of his offers have been including Vanderbilt's which was extended by the Commodores assistant coach, Marc Lubic, just just two weeks ago. The offer quickly piqued Jennings interest and soon made his way to Nashville.

"The visit [to Vanderbilt] went well," Jennings told VandyMania.com. "It was very informative. I got to go around the campus, look into a couple of classrooms, and see the facilities. I also got to meet with the coaches and a few of the players.

"I did get to speak with Coach Mason. He's very straightforward. I like that. Basically, he'll tell you what he's thinking. Coach Lubic, the wide receivers coach, is my recruiter. He likes my size and the physicality I can bring to the program. I don't know a lot about Vanderbilt. I know a lot of the staff, including Coach Mason, came over from Stanford and they're putting in a pro-style offense. When I received the offer, I was interested and wanted to go see it for myself and learn more about the program and the university."

Jennings, 6-foot-2, 205-pounds, was having a good year at wide receiver at Colonial Forge before the starting quarterback went down due to injury and his coaches asked him to assume the role. He flourished in it leading the Eagles to the Virginia Group 6A South Region championship and was named All-Conference as an All-Purpose player.

"It was just a big year for me," Jennings said on his 2013 season. "Most of the college interest I've received is because of last year's performance. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to be playing quarterback. If one of the younger guys step up I think I'd move back to receiver. If not, I'm happy to play quarterback. We'll be good this year regardless of where I play. It's state or bust."

Jennings has offers from Boston College, Buffalo, Duke, James Madison, Marshall, Navy, Old Dominion, Vanderbilt, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

"I've taken several visits to UVa, West Virginia, Vanderbilt and a few others, but don't have any favorites at the moment," he said. "I want to keep everything in front of me. I'm trying to find the right situation to be in where I can flourish both athletically and academically. It's my goal to make it to the next level, so I want to join a program that can help get me there. Location isn't factor for me. The best fit is the best fit."

The two schools that have offered Jennings at quarterback are Navy and James Madison. He said he's definitely intrigued by the offers and isn't ruling anything out as a possibility.
