Meeks talks Vandy offer

Quenton Meeks recently told VandyMania.com that the Commodore staff were getting "extremely close" to offering and that thought was proven right after a mid-week visit to campus. The 6-2, 195-pound wide receiver/defensive back out of San Diego's Del Norte High School drove up from the Atlanta area on Tuesday with his mother and brother to meet with the Vanderbilt coaches and see the campus.

"Going up [to Vanderbilt] really gave me the chance to see everything," Meeks said. "We toured the facilities, the academics buildings to see the classrooms, and the dorms. It was great to meet the coaches especially Coach Brett Maxie, who would be my position coach, and Coach Mason. I also got to talk with a couple of the players to get a feel for their take on the program. Overall, I'd say it was a great visit.

"The visit to campus actually opened my eyes a lot. I didn't really know what to expect. You hear that Vanderbilt has great academics and that the football program is coming up in a hurry but it's still unknown until you actually see it in person. I'm glad my family came with me as well, especially my mom because she hasn't been able to come with me on these college tours. She fell in love with the place."

Meeks had not been officially offered but the Commodore staff had been showing significant interest prior to his visit to campus.

"Coach Mason invited my family and I into his office," he said. "We talked for about 30 minutes and afterward he told me I was officially offered. Today he sent me a pic of the letter he's sending in the mail with the school's official offer. It's pretty cool. They're the first school to do that.

"I really enjoyed my time with Coach Maxie. He's a down-to-earth guy. I loved his coaching philosophy. I think he'd be great to have, not just as a coach, but also as a mentor. From our talk, I got a good feel for his overall football knowledge and thing he be a tremendous asset in helping me to develop my all-around game."

After time this summer in Atlanta with family, Meeks said he will fly back to San Diego tomorrow to begin preparing with his team for his senior season at Del Norte High School in the Poway area.
