Vanderbilt's football coaches got an early Christmas present this week when Drew Gardner, a 6-6, 305-pound offensive lineman from Hoxie, Ark., committed to play football for the Commodores.

"They really did a good job in recruiting me," said the big lineman. "I just really liked Nashville, and the school is a really good school. The coaches are just awesome."

Gardner, who chose Vanderbilt over Arkansas State, Missouri, Louisiana-Monroe and MTSU, was part of a Hoxie team that won its conference, finished 9-3 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. He said Thursday he has plans to become a coach one day.

Gardner was present for Vanderbilt's top prospects camp last June, and was back on campus unofficially for the Commodores' 31-13 October win over Mississippi State. He becomes the 14th member of Coach Bobby Johnson's recruiting class for 2005. For a complete list of Vanderbilt's commitments, click here.
