Vandy runs past Georgia, 72-55

Posted Feb 19, 2006

ATHENS -- Shan Foster poured in 23 points and DeMarre Carroll added 15 as Vanderbilt picked up a critical 72-55 win at Georgia. It was the Commodore's first win in Athens since the 1999-2000 season and avenged a 1-point loss to the Bulldogs two weeks ago in Nashville.

Vanderbilt (14-9, 5-7 SEC), which led by just four at the half, went on a 14-4 run to start the second half. A lay-up by Julian Terrell, who played sparingly in the first half due to a verbal altercation with his coach, extended Vandy's lead to 20 at 66-46 with 7 minutes remaining in the game.

Georgia's Sundiata Gaines cut the Vanderbilt lead to 13 with a field goal with 4:48 remaining. Shan Foster made a free throw with 1:56 remaining to give the Commodores a 70-53 lead and put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs.

In the first half Vanderbilt jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. Georgia took a 15-14 lead on a lay-up by Levi Stukes with 9 minutes remaining in the half. Vanderbilt quickly retook the lead on a 3-point shot by Derrick Byars. Georgia pulled ahead again briefly at 21-19 with 6 minutes remaining in the half. It would be the Bulldogs last lead of the night.

Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings was impressed with Shan Foster's 23 points, none of which were 3-pointers, "That's pretty incredible for Shan. Usually when he gets 23 he's got 2 or 3 threes to show for it and sometimes more than that," said a happy Stallings.

Georgia (14-11, 4-8 SEC) was led in scoring by Stukes who had 15. Other Vanderbilt scorers included Derrick Byars 9; Dan Cage 9; Julian Terrell 7; Alex Gordon 5 and Alan Metcalf with 4.

Vanderbilt next hosts #25 LSU on Wednesday night. Georgia hosts South Carolina on Thursday.
