On Wednesday afternoon, the #12-ranked Vanderbilt women's tennis team upset the #2-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame 4-3 at the Currey Tennis Center. Whitney D shares these photos from the afternoon.
As the match began, the afternoon was warm and sunny. Throughout the afternoon, student-athletes from various sports stopped by to cheer on the 'Dores, including Dominic de la Osa and Alex Feinberg from the baseball team.
After the Irish won the doubles point and claimed the #6 singles, Taka Bertrand at #2 earned Vanderbilt's first point of the afternoon, defeating Christian Thompson (6-2, 6-3).
Amanda Fish at #1 soon followed, defeating Catrina Thompson (6-2, 6-2) to even the score at 2-2.
Notre Dame won at #5, but Coutney Ulery's win at #4 (6-3, 6-3) tied the score again at 3-3. As the afternoon shadows lengthened, the outcome of the match depended on #3 singles, Amanda Taylor for Vanderbilt and Brook Buck for Notre Dame. Taylor won the first set 7-6, winning the tie-breaker 13-11.
Their own work for the afternoon complete, the other players from both teams lined up in the adjacent court to cheer on their teammates.
As the excitment and tension mounted, Vanderbilt staff, students, and fans gathered around to watch and to cheer.
The second set went to a tiebreaker, too, and when Taylor emerged victorious to win the match for Vanderbilt, her teammates joined her on the court for a victory celebration.
