Peach County coach comments on wide receiver

Udom Umoh, a lighting fast wide receiver, committed to Vanderbilt after a weekend visit. VandyMania talked with Peach County Head Coach Rance Gillespie about Umoh's play on the field and what interested him about Vanderbilt.

VandyMania.com: Talk a little about Udom Umoh as a player.
Rance Gillespie This kid is just a wonder. He's blessed with a lot of talent. He can catch and he can run and things like that. The thing that really sets him apart is just his work habits. The kid has pretty much just made himself into a really good player.

VM: How many catches did he have last year?
RG: I think it was 22 for almost 400 yards. He'll have an opportunity to be our playmaker this year. He was kind of a role player for us last year because we had the Slaughter kid (Auburn signee Chris Slaughter) who set the state record in touchdown receptions and had 1,400 yards receiving and 50 something receptions. He'll be the pace setter this year.

VM: What are some of the things that attracted Udom to Vanderbilt?
RG: Udom is very serious about his academics. He wants to be an engineer. They had a great program for him. It's an SEC school. Those things kind of culminated. His mother is a professor out at Fort Valley State. They visited this weekend and really liked it, really felt like it was a good fit for him. He really liked Coach Fisher and the coaches.

VM: What's his 40 time?
RG: 4.4, it's a high 4.4.

VM: I Googled him and saw a lot of mentions of him for track. Is he a track star too?
RG: Yeah, he won our region in the 400 and finished second in the 200. I think he finished sixth in the state in both of them.

VM: What other schools offered him?
RG: He had some other lesser Division 1-A, 1-AA but no one of that caliber. He had a couple of ACC teams that were recruiting him but nobody had actually pulled the trigger on him. Most of my kids, if they find a good fit for them they don't need their egos stretched.
