MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- Jemile Weeks’ (Miami) RBI single with two outs in the top of the ninth broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the USA Baseball National Team to a 3-1 win over Chinese Taipei in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Coastal Federal Field.

Pedro Alvarez (Vanderbilt) started things in the ninth with a one-out single and then stole second. Todd Frazier (Rutgers) walked and the next batter struck out, before Weeks’ came through with a RBI single, a high chopper that struck the first baseman’s glove and rolled into right field.

Darwin Barney (Oregon State) followed with a RBI double down the leftfield line that added an insurance run to make it 3-1.

Cole St. Clair (Rice) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. All six outs he recorded came via strikeout.

The US got on the board in the fifth when Pedro Alvarez walked, moved to second on a balk and scored on Julio Borbon’s (Tennessee) RBI single up the middle.

Chinese Taipei tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Wang Sheng Wei notched a base hit to left, stole second and scored on Wu Ming I’s RBI double to right-center.

As in the first game of the seven game series on Tuesday, both starting pitchers fared well on the mound, but did not factor in the decision.

Wes Roemer (Cal State Fullerton) allowed one run on five hits in seven innings of work with five strikeouts and two walks. Tang Chia Chun allowed one run on five hits in six innings of work with six strikeouts and three walks.

Jemile Weeks and Julio Borbon led the USA with two hits each, while Pedro Alvarez added a hit and two runs scored.

Wu Ming I led Chinese Taipei with two hits and an RBI.
