Pitt's Nick Mullins had 2 hits and 2 RBIs to help the Panthers take the early lead. Price pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving striking out 10 batters but not
having one of his better performances.
Vanderbilt rallied in the third and fourth inning to salvage a win.
David Macias got things started for the Commodores with a walk in the third. Pedro Alvarez's single got two men on base for Vandy. After a balk was called
on Pitt pitcher Paul Nardozzi, Shea Robin's single scored both Alvarez and Macias to bring the home team to within one run at 3-2.
Vanderbilt continued its onslaught in the fourth as Jonathan White doubled down the first base line. Brad French's single advanced White to third. Kurt
Lipton's hit scored White and knotted the game score at 3. David Macias' bunt advanced runners to second and third. A sacrifice groundout by Alex Feinberg
scored the winning run by French.
In the ninth scrappy Pitt got two runners on base off a single and a batter hit-by-pitcher but reliever Casey Weathers held on to get the save for the
Commodores. Weathers had 4 strikeouts in 2 innings of work. Ty Davis also saw some action during the seventh inning, giving up one hit to the Panthers.
Although Vanderbilt pounded out 12 hits, Commodore head coach Tim Corbin was not pleased with the team's hitting, "The bats looked slow, to be honest, we were
getting beat by fastballs . . . the kid had a pretty good arm but we were tardy and we weren't making very good adjustments at the plate. The 12 hits were
hollow, there was nothing behind them. We didn't piece anything together. I just thought it was not a very good showing offensively," said Corbin.
David Price (2-0) picked up the victory for Vanderbilt. Nardozzi (0-2) took the loss for Pitt.
Vanderbilt will take on Ball State tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the second game of the Music City Classic.
