As postseason SEC and NCAA tournaments loom some experts have begun to question whether or not Vanderbilt had enough proven starters to make it deep into post-season play.

Saturday and Sunday those questions were answered. On Saturday when the stellar freshman Mike Minor had an off day at the mound, Tim Corbin sent red shirt junior Ty Davis in to relieve Minor. The big Texan made a golden showing, striking out 7 and allowing just 1 earned runs, none in the final 5 innings.

A happy Corbin commented on Ty's performance after the game, "I think any performance like that makes me feel better and makes us feel better and gives the kids more confidence, particularly Ty."

On Sunday Vanderbilt elected to go with another red shirt junior, Cody Crowell. Crowell had moments of greatness during the 2006 season and finished with a 3.95 ERA but the Massachusetts native had yet to return to last years form in 2007. On Sunday Crowell returned to form, pitching better than ever.

Crowell struck out 11 batters and allowed just 3 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of outstanding work. "I was just going out there and trying to get through one inning at a time," said a humble Crowell after the game.

The outstanding performances by Crowell and Davis are big news to the Commodores in the quest for their first ever national championship in baseball. With the All-American lefty David Price firmly entrenched as the Friday starter and his under study Minor the Saturday starter, the emergence of Davis and Crowell gives the Commodores a third and fourth starter they can depend on.

As the No. 1 ranked squad finish their final three conference series and then head into the new season, they can be confident that they have two more starters that are capable of getting the job done.

Vanderbilt’s midweek home game against Middle Tennessee, scheduled for May 8th has been cancelled. Commodore head coach Tim Corbin scheduled the additional game in case any non-conference games were rained out. None were so the game had to be cancelled because the NCAA only allows 56 regular season baseball games. Vanderbilt is 1-1 versus the Blue Raiders this season.
