Bouncing back from an upset loss at Indiana State last week, the Vanderbilt women's basketball team defeated Clemson 74-56 in Clemson. Whitney D was there and filed these photos.
After playing their first two games of the season at home, the Dores lost their first road game at
Indiana State
University. On Tuesday night, they had another chance to claim their first road win of the season.
If you're anywhere near the
Clemson
campus, you can't miss the ubiquitous tiger's paw logo. This one graced the building across the street from Littlejohn Coliseum..
Inside the Coliseum, those paws are everywhere. How many paws can you find in this photo? There's the flag, the one at the base of the basketball goal, the one on the banner behind the goal below the pep band?
Don't forget to count all the ones on the upholstery of every seat in the Coliseum. . . . test
.. . . . and definitely don't forget the big one at center court!
Sophomore guard
Jessica Mooney
scored 10 points off the bench in the first half.
Sophomore post
Amy Malo
scores in the first half.
Sophomore guard
Lauren Lueders
played a career-high 35 minutes, scored 7 points, and had a career-high 8 rebounds.
How many tiger's paws in this photo? There were some gloomy stats for the Dores in the first half: 1 assists to 13 turnovers and still counting. Fortunately for
Vanderbilt
- and unfortunately for Clemson - the second half was a different story.
After the game, Coach Balcomb said that Lueders and
Merideth Marsh
, along with the upperclassmen, stepped up and helped calm things down in the second half.
Tina Wirth scores off an assist from
Liz Sherwood
Sherwood led the team in scoring with 22 points.
Jen Risper scored 10 points, connecting on 8 of her 9 free throws.
After the game, the Clemson players and coaches lined up, facing the pep band, to sing the alma mater, raising their arms to wave across the mountains. The orange cast to the photo isn't due to faulty white balance in the photo; it's due to the orange light in the gym while the alma mater is played.
Outside the gym after the game, Jen Risper and Tina Wirth had a lot to smile about. Not only had the team just claimed their first road win of the season, but Wednesday would be a day off with friends and familiy coming to town for the holiday weekend.
Weekend festivities include the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament. On Friday, Vanderbilt plays Belmont at 2 p.m., followed by
Michigan
and
Iowa State
at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the consolation game will be played at noon, followed by the championship game at 2 p.m. Admission is free to all tournament games.
