NASHVILLE-- Vanderbilt improved to 8-0 with an 83-80 win over the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest at Memorial Gym on Wednesday night. Shan Foster led the Commodores with 26, but it was A.J. Ogilvy who shined down the stretch.

Ogilvy started and finished the game strong. He scored 10 of the Commodores’ first 13 points and 6 of their final 7 points. He finished the game with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. With 1:29 left in the game, Ogilvy hit 2 free throws to tie the game at 78. After Jermaine Beal grabbed a defensive rebound on the ensuing Wake Forest possession, Ogilvy hit a hook shot from the baseline to put Vanderbilt ahead for good. Ogilvy grabbed the rebound on Wake’s next possession and was fouled. He hit both free throws to ice the game.

Foster did have some heroics of his own in this game. Wake had cut Vanderbilt’s lead to 27-25 with a 10-2 run. Foster answered with back-to-back threes to build the Commodores’ lead to 33-25.

The Demon Deacons were led in scoring by James Johnson and Harvey Hale with 18 points apiece.

Johnson made some big shots for the Demon Deacons in the second half. He made a basket to tie the game at 76 with 2 minutes left to play. Then with 1:36 left to play he hit another shot to put Wake ahead for the first time since they lead the game 5-4. Luckily for the Commodores, Johnson’s good play was erased by Ogilvy’s heroics down the stretch.

The story of the game was told from the free throw line. Both teams were in the double bonus for the final 11 minutes of the second half, but the Demon Deacons were unable to make their free throws down the stretch going 13-20. The Commodores shot 23-27 from the free throw line.

The Commodores will put their perfect record on the line Saturday night when the Bisons of Lipscomb come to Memorial Gym. That game tips off at 8:00.
