Mike Minor and Russell Brewer combined to pitch a 3 hitter to lead the Vanderbilt Commodores to a 7-1 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks Friday night in the first game of the Music City Classic.

Vanderbilt once again got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Andrew Giobbi’s single scored David Macias and Dominic de la Osa.

The Commodores would add another run in the top of the fourth inning when Giobbi led off the inning with a double. Giobbi would score on catcher Shea Robin’s two out infield single.

Vanderbilt would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Macias led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Macias advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan White. De la Osa then singled to center to score Macias. After de la Osa stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Kansas catcher Buck Afenir, he scored on another throwing error by Kansas center fielder Nick Faunce to extended the Vanderbilt lead to 5-0.

The Commodores would improve their lead to 6-0 in the sixth when a Brad French sacrifice fly scored Alex Feinberg who led off the inning with a walk.

After the Jayhawks got a run in the top of the seventh, the Commodores would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eight when Giobbi scored on a passed ball.

Minor (2-0) pitched very well on Friday night going 6 2/3 innings and giving up 1 run on 3 hits and 3 walks. He also had 9 strikeouts. "Mike can command his fastball and throw his changeup and breaking ball for strikes," said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. "It helps when you have a quality guy like him on Friday's throwing strikes."

Brewer pitched the last 2 1/3 innings giving up no hits and striking out 3. "I really like the way Russell comes in and throw strikes," said Corbin. "He comes in and makes key pitches in key moments and is not afraid. This is a guy who didn't pitch any for us last year. I just like him and call him the Quiet Assassin, he comes in and does his job and doesn't say much."
