Gene Robinson, 5-10, 185 pound defensive back from Memphis – Whitehaven High School (Tenn.) picked up his fifth offer today. Robinson who already has two SEC offers added his third today.
Gene Robinson
reported, “I just got an offer from
Vanderbilt
.” Robinson went on to say, “I was born in Nashville and I have family in Nashville and the academics are real strong.”
With Robinson’s family connection to Nashville he almost mistook the phone call from Coach
Bobby Johnson
for his relatives. He commented, “Coach Johnson called me to offer me, and it first I thought it may be my auntie, but it was Coach Johnson.”
Robinson explained of Vanderbilt’s campus, “I’ve already visited like two months ago, but I’m going to go again this summer.” Robinson said of his impressions of Vanderbilt, “It was better than I thought it would be. The first thing about Vanderbilt I thought was it would be all about school, but when I went into the facilities and to know they are adding on to the facilities, it was nice.”
With five offers in the bag Robinson is feeling confident about a relatively early decision. He explained, “I plan to make my decision at the end of the summer.” As far as the status of the Commodores he went on to say, “Vanderbilt has as good of a shot as everyone else.”
Robinson reported the competition for Vanderbilt as, “
Ole Miss
,
Alabama
,
Middle Tennessee
State, and
Memphis
.” He also added of the schools recruiting him the most, “I would have to say Vanderbilt and Alabama are going head to head. Recently Vanderbilt was recruiting me the heaviest but Alabama really came in strong.” Even though Vanderbilt and Alabama are recruiting the heaviest Robinson reported of having a favorite, “No sir, everybody is the same.”
The Commodores coaches have been after Robinson pretty hard. Robinson has been impressed with the Vanderbilt coaches he said, “Coach Belin has been keeping it real with me the whole time he has been recruiting me.” He added, “They sent the defensive back coach down to see me and he was pretty cool.” Robinson also commented on Coach Bobby Johnson, “Coach Johnson talked to me and talked to my dad and it was a nice conversation.”
Another factor that may help the Commodores with the recruitment of Gene Robinson is another Memphis native. Robinson said, “I talked to Deandre Jones, a Vanderbilt signee, from Memphis University School. He said he liked the coaching staff and it was a nice school.” As far as how Jones may help Vanderbilt’s chances of landing Robinson he said, “It helps a lot to tell you the truth.”
