NASHVILLE-- Eleven Presidents, several wars and 65 years have elapsed since the last time Vanderbilt was 5-0. On Saturday night Vanderbilt again reached a 5-0 record as they battled before a national television audience to a 14-13 victory over a tough Auburn Tiger team.
Auburn, behind the running of Ben Tate, jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead in the first quarter but Vanderbilt would not quit.
Mackenzi Adams
, filling in for ailing
Chris Nickson
, led scoring drives in the second and third quarters to put
Vanderbilt
in front to stay, 14-13.
Adams completed 13 of 23 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns on the night. He also ran for 49 yards on 14 carries. Sean Walker caught four passes for 66 yards.
One big play by the defense that saved the game for Vanderbilt was a goal line stand in the first quarter.
Auburn
drove to the Commodore one and chose to go for it on fourth down. The Vandy defense stuffed
Ben Tate
for no gain. A missed extra point on Auburn's second touchdown also prevented the game from going to overtime.
The Commodores pinned Auburn deep inside their 5-yard line for their final drive. Vanderbilt's Myron Lewis intercepted a Chris Todd pass to seal the huge win.
Vanderbilt is 5-0 for the first time since 1943. The Commodores will visit
Mississippi State
on Saturday. Vanderbilt has not been 6-0 since the 1928 season. Stay tuned for more on VandyMania.com.
