5-star DL high on Vanderbilt

Garrison Smith

This five-star DE/DT prospect from out of the Peach State recently trimmed down his gaudy list of schools to ten favorites, and Vanderbilt made the cut. VandyMania.com had the privilege of speaking with the prolific defensive lineman from out Douglass High School. Find out what all he has to say about the ‘Dores in this exclusive recruiting update courtesy of your friends here at VandyMania.com.

A number of prestigious DI programs have entered themselves into the Garrison Smith sweepstakes. And the truth to matter is that only one of them will be fortunate enough to land the prized recruit's signature on National Signing Day next February. And with that in mind, the process has started. The elimination process, that is…

In a recent recruiting update on the Scout.com Network, the five-star DE/DT prospect from out of Douglass High School had narrowed down his list of schools to ten programs. And those ten schools were: Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Florida State, Ohio State, USC, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, in no particular order.

VandyMania.com quickly got in touch with the high profiled defensive lineman prospect, after learning that the Commodores had made his personal top ten... And during our interview with Smith, the 6-3.5, 255 pound DL confirmed that the ‘Dores were indeed in the running for his services… "Oh yeah, Vanderbilt is definitely in my top ten," the gifted defensive lineman told VandyMania.com. "I really like what Coach Johnson is doing with the program. They are also a good academic school."

Although February is still a good ways away, it is quite refreshing to know that Vanderbilt is one of Garrison's ten finalists. However though, that is not the only intriguing news the 2nd ranked defensive tackle in the country had to share with us. The highly-rated prospect also informed us that he'd like to take a visit to Nashville sometime in the very near future. "Vanderbilt is one of the main schools I'm trying to visit," Smith said. "I'd like to get out there sometime this summer. If I can't, I'm going to take a visit there over the fall; during the season."

A visit to Nashville will only give Smith an opportunity to get a little more acquainted with the Vandy Coaching Staff, who has been doing an outstanding job keeping tabs on the highly-touted recruit. "I talk to Coach Logo, Coach Johnson, and Coach Kitchens a lot," Smith shared with VandyMania.com. "I really like those guys. They're real good people. I really like the relationship I have with those guys."

Smith did not indicate what his next move was going to be, but he did inform us that a decision could be coming within the next month or so. "Actually I am thinking about getting my decision over with before the season starts, so I can get some of the pressure off of me," he said. "That way I'll be able to focus on my senior season; stuff like that. This recruiting stuff can get a little crazy sometimes (laughing). But I'm not complaining, because God has been good to me."
