Vanderbilt Nukes Manhattan, 86-48
Vanderbilt jumped out to an early 6-0 lead but it looked like Manhattan might be able to make things interesting as the VU lead was only 10-6 with 15 minutes left in the first half. However, two Lance Goulbourne made free throws snowballed into a 16-2 Vanderbilt run that made the score 26-8 with 7:22 to go before the half. The Jaspers, led by guard Darryl Crawford who had 12 points, battled back and kept the score from getting worse before halftime as the Commodores went to the the locker room leading 38-22.
In the second half things got ugly for out-manned Manhattan as the Commodores shot 48 percent from the field while limiting the visitors to only 26 percent. Sparked by seven points in a four-minute span by Andre Walker, Vanderbilt built their lead to 51-24 with 15:47 to play. Vandy then embarked on a sizzling 26-5 run that made it 77-29 after a Brad Tinsley three-pointer with 8 minutes to play. With walk-ons and freshmen playing the remainder of the game, Manhattan was able to make make it little more respectable as they outscored Vanderbilt 19-9 in the final minutes.
Vanderbilt out rebounded Manhattan, 57-41, and outscored the Jaspers in the paint, 47-24.
Vanderbilt improves to 9-3 with the victory. The Commodores continue their home stand on Saturday when they host Southern Miss. Vanderbilt has now won 11 in a row at Memorial Gym, including all six games this year. The Commodores last home loss was against Florida on Jan. 25, 2009. Stallings is now second all-time in wins at Vanderbilt with 198 victories, passing Bob Polk who had 197. Manhattan falls to 6-6 and will play in their seventh straight road game on Saturday when they visit Marist.
