Nashville,
Tenn. - The family of Vanderbilt student-athlete Kwane Doster is expected to
attend an on-campus memorial service Friday to celebrate the life of the former
Commodore football player.
Numerous speakers, including Vanderbilt
Chancellor Gordon Gee, football head coach Bobby Johnson and Vanderbilt students
with close ties to Doster, are expected to participate in the service, scheduled
to begin at 4 p.m., in Benton Chapel. The chapel is located at the Vanderbilt
Divinity School, just off 21st Avenue South between the Owen Graduate School of
Management and the main library.
The Doster family also will join in a
special ceremony scheduled Saturday during halftime of the Vanderbilt-Florida
basketball game. Gee, Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor David Williams and
representatives of the Vanderbilt Student Government Association and Vandy
Fanatics organization will participate in a presentation to the family at
halftime.
Doster, a 21-year-old native of Tampa, Fla., was killed by
gunfire in his hometown on Dec. 26 while sitting in the backseat of a friend’s
car. A junior majoring in Human and Organizational Development, Doster was a
three-year letterwinner on the football team and one of squad’s most exciting
players. He was expected to return for his final year in 2005 as the team’s
leading active rusher and one of the top kickoff specialists in school
history.
The Friday service in Benton Chapel is open to the public.
Seating is limited.
The Rev. Gary White of the Vanderbilt Chaplain’s
Office will lead the one-hour service on Friday. The Rev. Roy Young, pastor of
Doster’s hometown church, also is expected to speak.
