| of Tennessee’s 31 games, receiving two starting assignments. He provided valuable minutes off the bench at the wing position and, at times, the shooting guard position. Established himself as an outstanding defensive player. Averaged 1.6 points and 1.4 rebounds in SEC games. Ended a late run by Arkansas when he drove the lane to hit a lay-up with 2:53 left in Tennessee’s win against the Razorbacks (2/13/02) ... Scored four points on 2-for-2 shooting in two minutes of play at Vanderbilt (2/2/02). Had four points, including a monster dunk, and four rebounds at No. 8 Florida (2/26/02). Played the last two minutes of regulation and all of the overtime period at Mississippi State (1/16/02). Scored eight points in 16 minutes of action against Alaska Anchorage (11/23/01). Earned his first career start while playing in the first collegiate game of his career against Tennessee Tech (11/16/01). Scored 14 points in 20 minutes of action in Tennessee’s exhibition game against Kentucky ABA.
Earned first team honors on the Florida Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A All-State squad as a senior in high school. Derek averaged 20.0 points, eight rebounds and four assists per game. Was rated as the No. 46 high school senior in the nation by BlueChips.com. Ranked as the No. 73 player in the nation by Rivals100hoops.com. Listed as the No. 3 senior in the state of Florida and a Top 100 nationally by HoopShowcase.com. Earned High Honorable Mention honors from Street & Smith’s. Led Rickards High to a 29-4 record in his final campaign as a prep. With his leadership, the Raiders advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 1992. Played his first three seasons at Lake Region High School in Eagle Lake, Fla., before transferring to Rickards HS for his senior year. As a junior he averaged 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. Played for the USA High School All-Star team in tournaments in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Baltimore, Md. Led the U.S. All-Stars with 13 points and was named the team’s MVP in the Baltimore Charm City Challenge. Played both guard positions and small forward. Coached by Andy Colville.
